Fields are unable to reach the horizon because the length of the black hole throat blows up in the extremal limit. The length of the throat is related to the amount of entanglement between modes on either side of the horizon. So it is natural to try to relate the black hole Meissner effect to entanglement. We derive the black hole Meissner effect directly from the low temperature limit of two-point functions in the Hartle-Hawking vacuum. Then we discuss several new examples of the black hole Meissner effect, its applications to astrophysics, and its relationship to gauge invariance.

Correlation loss and multipartite entanglement across a black hole horizon

We investigate the Hawking effect on entangled fields. By considering a scalar field which is in a two-mode squeezed state from the point of view of freely falling (Kruskal) observers crossing the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole, we study the degradation of quantum and classical correlations in the state from the perspective of Schwarzschild observers confined outside the horizon. Due to ...

“Meissner effect” and Blandford-Znajek mechanism in conductive black hole magnetospheres

The expulsion of axisymmetric magnetic field from the event horizons of rapidly rotating black holes has been seen as an astrophysically important effect that may significantly reduce or even nullify the efficiency of the Blandford-Znajek mechanism of powering the relativistic jets in Active Galactic Nuclei and Gamma Ray Bursts. However, this Meissner-like effect is seen in vacuum solutions of ...

Thermodynamics of entanglement in Schwarzschild spacetime

Extending the analysis in our previous paper, we construct the entanglement thermodynamics for a massless scalar field on the Schwarzschild spacetime. Contrary to the flat case, the entanglement energy Eent turns out to be proportional to area radius of the boundary if it is near the horizon. This peculiar behavior of Eent can be understood by the red-shift effect caused by the curved backgroun...

Black hole entropy as entanglement entropy: a holographic derivation

We study the possibility that black hole entropy be identified as entropy of entanglement across the horizon of the vacuum of a quantum field in the presence of the black hole. We argue that a recent proposal for computing entanglement entropy using AdS/CFT holography implies that black hole entropy can be exactly equated with entanglement entropy. The implementation of entanglement entropy in ...
